So a little about the Outdoor Afro group that hosted the hike. They are a national group with many chapters across the country. Their slogan...Where Black People and Nature Meet. And you just gotta love the name! What a great collection of like-minded individuals. The group sponsors hikes, camping trips, bike rides, etc. to give brown folks an opportunity to commune with nature and fellowship with one another. It's a great way to leave the modern day stresses of the world behind for just a couple of hours at a time and reconnect with the beauty created by our maker. So, back to the hike, 3-miles is perfect for a newbie. I'll have to share with you how I "prepared" for the hike. Of course I picked up my trail mix for the trail. That's what you take on a hike right? At any rate, the weather was awesome..cool and sunny (a great combo) There were some challenging climbs but with the positive vibe of the group encouraging me on, hey I felt like I could do anything. Once we made it to one of the first look outs, it was well worth the climb. Got some great photos and was able to breath deep and EXHALE. You know how it feels to simply EXHALE. And then we were back on our way back to civilization. It took about 2 hours or so to complete the hike and when we returned we enjoyed an impromptu potluck picnic. Special shout out to our Outdoor Afro Leader Duane for making sure I didn't fall off a "mountain" and to co hiker Cynthia for pointing out poison ivy to us. Duane was a great guide, he kept us moving, he had great energy and was super encouraging. Thanks for the breaks at just the right time Duane. ;) Again, he was great! I encourage you to take a walk or hike sometime just to get out of your bubble or to get from in front of your computer and experience nature. You won't regret it.
Peace, love and Happy Hiking ;)
